General Hunting Information/Requirements

Clothing and Equipment

The following checklist is provided as a guideline of basic clothing and equipment requirements.

  • Waterproof outer Gore-Tex coat and over trousers (preferably both camouflage in mid-dark green colour-ways)
  • Comfortable hunting jacket (camouflage preferred)
  • Warm hunting shirts (2-3)
  • Warm long trousers and light weight trousers (camouflage preferred)
  • Lightweight shirt
  • Thermal underwear
  • Warm socks
  • Sturdy well broken trekking boots essential and gaiters (New Zealand Quarantine requires spotlessly clean boots on entry at arrivals)
  • Sun hat or peaked cap, sunglasses, warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Hearing protection and shooting glasses
  • Shoes or slippers for Lodge wear
  • Casual clothes for evening wear in the Lodge
  • Personal effects and medications
  • Insect repellant
  • Small backpack (optional)
  • Quality binoculars in 10x40 or similar are essential, range finder optional
  • Camera/s
  • Rifles .270 - .375 caliber with 4x or similar power scope
  • 40 rounds of appropriate ammunition

Note: A lodge rifle Weatherly or Browning 300mag complete with Zeiss 3.5 - 10x scope and ammunition is available upon request. Cost: US$25 per day.

Firearms Important Information Details

Should you choose to travel with your own firearm/s you will require a New Zealand Visitors Firearms License (permit). It may be initiated prior to your arrival for your convenience. You can download an application form from the New Zealand police website, http://www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms/#resources.

To ensure the license is ready for you upon arrival in New Zealand, simply fax or post the following information to the New Zealand Police: or to our friendly staff. We can arrange everything for you.

  • Your full name, address and contact details
  • Date of birth
  • Occupation
  • Passport photocopy
  • Current photograph
  • Any current firearm permit/license(s)
  • Your flight number, date and time of arrival
  • Particulars of the firearms you are bringing

YOUR PROCEDURE ON ARRIVAL THROUGH NEW ZEALAND CUSTOMS:

DECLARE any firearms that you are carrying. This means filling out the form and noting that you are bringing in a prohibited item. Seek the police kiosk at arrivals. A Visitor’s Firearms License will be issued to you at this time by the airport police at the cost of $NZ25. (This must be paid in New Zealand currency, cash only.)
Note: Handguns are illegal in New Zealand
